Fallout 4: How to Easily Hack Terminals

fallout-4-hacking-600x337

Computers and terminals have been a part of the Fallout series since Fallout 3, and they’re back yet again in Fallout 4. On the surface, hacking a terminal doesn’t seem too complex, but it can get frustrating choosing the wrong word on multiple attempts and having to wait a few seconds before you can log back in again.

Each time you pick a password, the computer will give you a ‘Likeness’ rating, letting you know how many letters are in the actual password. It’s your job to make smart guesses about what the password is. However, you only have four attempts before the computer locks you out. Here are a few short tips to help make your hacking experience a little easier.

Fallout 4 Lockpicking Tips

5-1-1446845574

Lockpicking is more oldschool, and uses the same minigame as the one observed in The Elder Scrolls series. Unlike Hacking, Lockpicking actually requires tools to lockpick. The tool used is a Bobby Pin.

You can find plenty of Bobby Pins throughout the Commonwealth. Make sure you have plenty around, as there are plenty of safes, doors, and toolboxes to unlock, all with some amazing items.

PICK YOUR FIRST WORD WISELY

fallout-4-hacking-600x337

For your first word, try to pick one that doesn’t have duplicate letters. For instance, you might want to pick ‘CLOSE’ instead of ‘CLASS’ just so you’ll have a rough idea of which letters to look for, depending on the likeness you get.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE ‘LIKENESS’ RATING

If you picked ‘CLOSE’ and got a ‘Likeness’ rating of 0, that’s actually really good news for you. Now all you have to do is look through the rest of your options and try words that don’t have the letters C, L, O, S, or E in them, and ensure that that the next word you pick doesn’t have the same letter placement as your first. If you get a rating of 1 or 2, pick words with 1 or 2 identical letters and start a process of elimination from there.

BACK OUT AFTER THREE ATTEMPTS

If you’ve blown through your first three attempts and you’re not confident of nailing the password on your final try, I suggest backing out of the terminal and then logging back in for a fresh attempt. It’s much more efficient and infinitely less frustrating than having to wait around for 10 seconds just to try it again.

Strong

fallout-4-strong

A Super Mutant who is initially locked up by his brothers at Trinity Tower, Strong uses melee weapons and a missile launcher for long distances. He dislikes any lockpicking, hacking, and stealth as a strategy, so he may be the most difficult to sway as a companion.

Romanceable: No

Where to Meet: Trinity Tower, Locked in Cage at Tower’s Top

Likes/Dislikes: Be like a Super Mutant, violent. But he’s trying to find his human side, so be generous and peaceful when you can. Strong doesn’t care for you using any sort of human technology, be it power armor or vertibirds, and disapproves of you picking locks and using speech to gain more caps. Of the roster, though, he doesn’t care if you murder innocent people or even eat corpses for health (Cannibal perk).

Loyalty Side Quest: N/A (But will participate in side quest Curtain Call)

Max Approval Perk: Berserk – Deal +20% damage with melee weapon damage when you fall below 25% health.

X6-88

Fallout 4_20151108201834

As an Institute Courser, X6-88 is an android with incredibly high combat skills and perception, destroying enemies with energy-based weaponry.

Romanceable: No

Where to Meet: The Institute, Synth Retention Center

Likes/Dislikes: Don’t be nice and generous. This synth doesn’t care for it. But he does approve of hacking terminals, Power Armor, and weapons/armor modification. So anything tech-related is all-good in his book.

Loyalty Side Quest: N/A (But completing The Institute side quests helps)

Max Approval Perk: Shield Harmonics – Gain +20 Energy Resistance permanently.
